Syria According to my brother...

September 21, 2013
The White House is spinning the agreement with the Russians over Syrian chemical weapons as an example of President Obama’s diplomatic skill—if only this wasn’t just spin and inaccurate spin at that. Even the State Department sought to minimize Secretary Kerry’s casual statement on disarming Syria of chemical weapons. Now that there is this agreement will the White House be claiming credit when this agreement gives Assad the upper hand in the ongoing civil war?

Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticized the deal struck by the US and Russia regarding the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile. McCain and Graham said the deal would give the Syrian president, Assad, time "to delay and deceive" while the country's civil war continued. The statement said: "It requires a willful suspension of disbelief to see this agreement as anything other than the start of a diplomatic blind alley, and the Obama administration is being led into it by Bashar Assad and [Russian president] Vladimir Putin."

Graham is reported to beplanning to introduce a bill in the Senate calling for air attacks in support of the rebels. McCain and Graham were both proponents of an attack on Syria that would aid the rebels to gain the upper hand in the civil war. Their statement doesn’t say it but they probably understand that the agreement gives Assad a true advantage in the civil war. The UN forces moving into Syria to secure the chemical weapons will be in the middle of active combat areas. If the rebels attack them then world opinion will turn against them. If they move away from the areas where the UN forces are they give up hard fought for terrain and cannot capture the chemical weapons that the Al Qaeda elements so wanted for other purposes. The agreement allows Assad to free up forces from the chemical weapons security mission and he is free to use those forces in combating the rebels. Sounds like a tactical advantage for Assad to me.

Additionally Assad is now trying to gain further leverage by claiming that part of the agreement should include that the West cannot arm the rebels. At the same time the Russians continue to introduce “proof” that the rebels launched the chemical attack.

The Jerusalem Post is claiming that 20 trucks of chemical weapons left Syria and are now in Iraq for safeguarding. (Saddam’s weapons returned to Iraq?) If this is true then it is truly a big win for Assad. He has all of the advantages of the international agreement and retains sufficient weapons to do what he may need to do.

The biggest winner is Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has shown that Russia is a major player in the middle-east in spite of its internal weaknesses. He has called into question the credibility of the US as a patron to many middle-eastern states and has shown the US President to be incapable of matching him in the ability to “play the game” While the Obama administration is spinning a “win” the reality is a huge loss. They are starting to realize this as they talk about the military option still being on the table, but is it? After the claims of victory how can they claim that they were deceived and then attack? The whole situation is not desirable but it may be until 2014 when the disarmament is supposed to begin that the reality becomes truly apparent. Is this before or after the election? Everything else is being pushed to after the election. Is there a message there?

The real loser in this whole farce is the credibility of the United States and its president.

Cindy Says article for Splurge...

Good Morning...it's me again needing to write an article for Splurge.
This time the theme is sayings...sayings you use in your every day speech to be able to get a difficult or complicated point across. An example...
A Bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. This idea is in every culture in the world. In sales I use these little parables all the time to get a complicated or difficult concept across or just to inspire a smile or a laugh.  Some times that ah ha moment is made simple saying.  Please share with me your favorites that have been handed down by a parent or a person you have known. Please help me write this article...I really need your sayings for..."Cindy Says"
Happy Hump Day,
Cindy

Getting Ready for the Debate...

Good Morning,
Attached are articles that my brother has written about issues of Foreign Policy.  He sent them to me and I thought you might be interested. Just paste the links into your browser to read them.

Bruce helped write the Salt II Treaty and Negotiate the Arms Control Treaty and was the Army expert on conflict resolution.  He is now retired and writes some interesting pieces for the Examiner.  I may not agree with everything he says but needless to say I do believe he knows more about Foreign Policy than I will ever know!
Happy Monday,
Cindy

Major Ice cream discovery Miracle!!

Okay,

I just had to pass this along because I can hardly believe it. What would you say if I told you that you could eat a whole pint of ice cream for 150 calories?  What if it also had 14 grams of whey protein,8 grams of fiber and is great if you are lactose intolerant, FAT FREE, low sugar And gluten free!!!

I found it yesterday and it is true! Run, do not walk to your local Whole Foods and buy every single pint they have of Artic Zero Frozen Desserts.(4.99 each)

I won't lie and say it is exactly like real ice cream, but it is darn close and it fills the sweet tooth.  I highly recommend the Chocolate Peanut Butter. I "doctored" it up a bit by adding a tsp of PB2 (also a miracle replacement for peanut butter-- check amazon.com) and a little light Hershey's syrup.

Well, I could have started crying.  I didn't even eat the whole container, only had half. You can scoop it out and put it in a cone too. Here's a tip-- let it thaw a little it is hard as a rock.

Its a miracle, boys and girls, it truly is.

Tax Write-Off's A Timely Topic...

Write-offs to Remember
Deductions in the Loan Process

Write-offs are the government's way of rewarding taxpayers when they've done something the government likes. And to judge by the write-offs, the government likes it when people borrow money to buy a house. There are write-offs aplenty, many of which people often forget.

Points:
According to the IRS, origination fees charged as points must be paid for the use of money, (for example, to obtain a lower interest rate) in order to be tax deductible. Origination fees that constitute a "service fee" are not tax deductible. The question must be asked, "Does the fee apply to the use of money, or is it a service charge?"

Pre-payment penalties:
Unforeseen circumstances often cause borrowers to pull out of their mortgages sooner than expected. Fortunately, pre-payment penalties are tax deductible, which helps ease the pain.

Pro-rated real estate taxes:
Even if the seller sent the tax collector the check, chances are the buyer paid a pro-rated portion of the taxes for the year at closing. Be sure they know to deduct their fair share.

Pro-rated mortgage interest:
Depending on when in the month the home sale closes, buyers pay either a hefty or a tiny amount of pro-rated mortgage interest for that month. Big or small, they can write that off. The Final Closing/Settlement Statement will show just how much they've paid.

Home construction loan interest:
As long as the construction period doesn't last more than two years before they make the new place their "principal residence," they can write off the interest for that construction loan.

It pays to pay attention – all these write-offs can add up to some serious savings when tax time comes around.

Great Tip for Wood Roof Repairs

Wood Roof Repairs:

All maintenance and repairs should be left to the experienced. Walking on a cedar roof can be tricky and can also damage a roof -- even one in good condition. Contractors inexperienced with wood may damage surrounding materials. Individual damaged, loose, missing, cupped or curled shingles and shakes can be quickly replaced by an experienced roofing contractor. New materials can be blended with the old to some degree with this simple formula:

  • Dissolve one pound of baking soda in a half-gallon of water. Dip, brush or spray the replacement materials and lay them in the sun. After about 4 hours, the shingles should permanently turn gray.
